SA - Technical Analysis

For my technical analysis I looked at 'The XX - VCR', as I felt the type of video is similar to what we are planning to use in terms of camera techniques and editing.

  • As the cutting rate in this video wasn't very fast, matching the tempo of the song, I took a shot by shot analysis of the whole video and this helped me to see how the use of shallow depth of field and long takes on some shots can work effectively to show a particular mood in a video.
  • In this video most of the shots were at least 2 to 3 seconds long, some even longer. In our video i think this very slow cutting rate wouldn't be suitable, however the shot types and techniques used in this video could be used very well in our video.
  • This video is shot constantly in black and white until 1:58, when there is a transition from B & W to colour in one shot, as a lantern is brought down over the males face.
  • The black and white at the start makes everything seem cold and harsh, and there is a hard contrast between the dark and light areas making it seem very moody, however when the colour comes in, there is a warmth to the video and near the end the room changes to one where there are cold blues and greens, the different colours and light is helpful in conveying different moods within videos.

Below are my notes that I took of each shot when analysing the music video shot by shot:
